Spring 2023 Classes
Earth Science
Students will learn about the Earth's layers and how movement of the plates have shaped the Earth's surface over the past 4.5 billion years. They will create fault models to illustrate the three fault types, perform earthquake activities, and learn how a seismograph is used to measure movement. The rock cycle will be investigated using Starburst candy models to demonstrate sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock formation. Students will learn about the criteria used to identify minerals and perform various tests, use Skittles candies to observe weathering and erosion, and perform cupcake core sampling to learn how scientists study what is below the Earth's surface.
Grade level: 4-8 (mature 3rd graders accepted in classes offered in Rescue- see below for details)
$225 (Foothill Learning Academy (FLA)) for 12 weeks - 1 hr./class (12 labs)
$188 (Rescue) for 5 weeks - 2 hr./class (10 labs)
Mondays: 9-11 a.m. (Rescue). Click on Outdoor Class Info button below.
Tuesdays: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. (EDH)
Thursdays: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. (Placerville)

Zoology
Students will explore the anatomy, physiology, and behavior of various animals. Some of the hands-on activities include performing earthworm behavior experiments (no worms will be harmed!), making body symmetry models, dissecting an owl pellet and clam, using echolocation boxes to observe how bats "see", performing bird behaviors, and sorting beans to understand classification.

Microscopy (Outdoor)
Grade level: 4-12 (mature 3rd graders welcome)
Class Fee: $36
Class Length: One 2-hour class (2 hours total)
Days/Time: Friday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Location: Rescue - outdoor class
Explore the exciting hidden microscopic world with a microbiologist! In this class, students will explore the wonders of pond water (diatoms/algae/protozoa and various other tiny creatures) and stain/examine their cheek cells and onion cells. Students will also learn the parts/functions of a microscope, how to properly use a microscope without damaging lenses and slides, and how to prepare a wet mount. I provide high-quality microscopes for students to use, however, students are welcome to bring their own microscope and I can show them how to use it.
For questions or to register, call/text Lisa at 530-313-3789 or email your child's name, grade, charter school name, and your phone number to [email protected].
