COVID INFORMATIION
Effective 8/5/21
As a charter school vendor, I have signed contracts and am legally required to apply the COVID precaution requirements of the most restrictive charter school to any class I teach. Failure to follow the requirements could result in a charter school teminating my contract.
The following requirements will apply to all charter school and privately homeschooled students:
1) All students and adults must wear a mask while indoors. Masks below the nose and mesh/lace masks are not allowed.
2) Students do not need to wear masks when outdoors.
If charter schools no longer allow outdoor gatherings during the class session, I will cancel the class and refund all unused fees.

Anatomy and Problem-Solving Creations 1
Students will explore various body systems and create medical devices for them. Examples of some of the activities/models: build a pasta skeletal model and edible bone model, design/build a prosthetic leg, walk through a large heart model to understand the structure of the heart and how blood is oxygenated, design/build a device to clear a blocked artery, examine a pig heart and lungs, build a digestive tract model, and design/test pill coatings. All class supplies are included in the fee, but I'm collecting items we can recycle from home (click button below for details). Due to the interactive nature of this class, it will be cancelled if in-person classes are shut down and fee for cancelled classes refunded. This class will be followed by Anatomy and Problem-Solving Creations 2 (Spring 2022)

Astronomy
Students will explore the wonders of the universe through model building and activities. Topics include the Sun, the planets, the solar system's size, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids, low-mass and high-mass star life cycles, black holes, nebulae, and craters. Students will build models of asteroids and comets, "travel" to each planet to observe interesting phenomena, create a nebula in a bottle and a high-mass/low-mass star life cycle mobile, view the Sun using special solar glasses, and more. I will schedule a night for students to meet at the Community Observatory in Placerville. (This is the same class that was offered online Spring 2021.) All class supplies are included in the fee, but I'm collecting items we can recycle from home (click button below for details) . Due to the interactive nature of this class, it will be cancelled if in-person classes are shut down and fee for cancelled classes refunded. This class will be followed by Rollercoaster STEM (Spring 2022).

Microscopy
Explore the exciting hidden world with a microbiologist! In this class, students will explore the wonders of pond water (diatoms/spirulina/protozoa and various other tiny creatures), stain and examine their cheek cells and plant cells (eukaryotes), examine different types of bacteria (prokaryotes), and discover the beauty of butterfly wings and other insects parts. Students will also learn the parts and functions of a microscope, how to properly use a microscope without damaging lenses and slides, how to prepare wet mount and well slides, and use a simple microtome. I provide high-quality microscopes for students to use, however, students are welcome to bring their own microscope and I can show them how to use it properly.
