Grades 4-8 - In-Person Hands-On Science Classes
2020 Fall Semester plans are still up in the air, however, I will be offering outdoor classes at my home in Rescue as long as it is allowed in El Dorado County. Students and I will be practicing social distancing and masks will be required for times when we can't be 6 feet apart. Masks will not be required during the entire class since we are outdoors. Equipment will be sanitized between classes and students will be seated at least 6 feet apart in a shaded outdoor area.
Topics taught during the 8-week semester (see below schedule for details):
Solar Oven Science: Students will make a solar oven, cook s'mores, and learn about the physics behind how it works.
Wonders of Water: Students will explore the properties of water (adhesion, cohesion, surface tension) through fun (and wet!) activities.
Intro to Chemistry: Students will make atom and molecule models, test the pH of various solutions, balance chemical equations, experience freezing point depression while making ice cream, and learn about endothermic/exothermic reactions.
Rocks & Minerals: Students will learn the difference between rocks and minerals, perform various tests on minerals, learn the rock cycle using Starburst candies, and perform cupcake core sampling.
Students will attend one 2 hour 10 minute class per week for 8 weeks for a total of 16 hours of lab time fall semester.
Note: Students must enroll for the entire 8 weeks and stay in the session in which they are signed up so groups of students will stay separate.
Classes will start the week of August 17 and end the week of October 6. Plan to keep the week of 10/13 free in case we have to postpone a class due to poor weather and make it up that week.
Class fee: $240 (two $120 vouchers or payments). Payment will not be due until right before classes start.
I am a vendor for Visions, Horizons, South Sutter, Inspire, and Pacific Charter Institute (Heritage Peak, Sutter Peak, Rio Valley, Valley View). I also accept cash/check/Venmo/PayPal. If your charter school is not allowing use of vouchers for in-person classes and you are experiencing financial difficulties during the pandemic, please give me a call.
Maximum of 10 students/class. Class size minimum is 6 students to hold the class.
Grades 4-8 (mature 3rd graders welcome, too)
