Dissection Labs
Class location: Rescue (5 miles off Highway 50)
Grades 4-12 (I will accept younger students if a parent attends with them.)
One 2-hour session
Students will dive into the unexpected contents of a frog's stomach, marvel at the beauty of the tapetum lucidum in a cow's eye, feel a crayfish's stomach "teeth", learn about their own body systems by dissecting a rat or a fetal pig, and much more. Super gross, but super fun and interesting! In the dissection lab, students will explore the internal and external structures of specimens (fetal pig, rat, frog/earthworm, crayfish/cow eye).
Students will have their own specimens to dissect along with their own set of dissection tools to use and may label diagrams to reinforce what they have observed during the dissection. Dissection classes are for grades 4 and up, however, 3rd graders will be admitted to class by special permission. Students must be mature, willing and able to follow detailed instructions and focus for 2 hours, and have excellent fine motor skills (they will be using a very sharp scalpel and scissors). Parents of younger students are welcome to attend the class and assist their child.
For questions or to register, call Lisa at 530-313-3789 or email your child's name, grade, charter school name, and your phone number to lisahandsonscience@gmail.com. Registration is open until the day before the class if there is space and spare specimens.

Microscopy
Grade level: 4-12
Class Fee: $32
Class Length: One 2-hour class (2 hours total)
Days/Time: Wednesday, March 9, 2:00-4:00 p.m. (inclement weather makeup day on 3/16/22)
Location: Rescue - outdoor class. Masks are not required.
Explore the exciting hidden microscopic world with a microbiologist! In this class, students will explore the wonders of pond water (diatoms/algae/protozoa and various other tiny creatures), stain and examine their cheek cells and onion cells (eukaryotes), examine different types of bacteria (prokaryotes), and discover the beauty of butterfly wings and other insect parts. Students will also learn the parts and functions of a microscope, how to properly use a microscope without damaging lenses and slides, and how to prepare a wet mount. I provide high-quality microscopes for students to use, however, students are welcome to bring their own microscope and I can show them how to use it.
For questions or to register, call Lisa at 530-313-3789 or email your child's name, grade, charter school name, and your phone number to lisahandsonscience@gmail.com.

Outdoor Ecology
Let's get together in nature and learn about the interactions between organisms and their surroundings. I'll do my best to not break my ankle this semester!!
In this 2-class series, students will be out in the field learning about ecosystems, biotic/abiotic factors, symbiosis (mutualism/commensalism/parasitism), food webs, plant communities (chaparral/oak woodland), and plant/animal adaptations. This park has a very diverse population of plants and animals for us to observe. Last March, we saw a slender salamander, centipede, horsehair worm, a variety of mushrooms, lots of flowers and acorn woodpeckers, just to name a few!
No masks are required since this is an outdoor class.
Days/Time:
2 - one-hour classes (2 weeks) (Class may go over 1 hour, so please don't have anything scheduled right after this class.
Session 2: March 30 & April 6 (Wednesdays), 2:00-3:00 p.m. (Class Confirmed)
Session 3: April 20 & 27 (Wednesdays), 2:00-3:00 p.m. (Tentative based on enrollment and rain. If we don't get rain, there might not be much to see!)
Grade level: 4-12 without a parent, Grades 2-3 with a parent (All parents are welcome to join, too.)
Class fee: $30 per student
Location: Bass Lake Regional Park (next to Sellwood Field) in El Dorado Hills
Suggested items for students to bring to class: comfortable closed-toed shoes, water, hat and binoculars (sometimes there is a bald eagle at the park!)
For questions or to register, call Lisa at 530-313-3789 or email your child's name, grade, Session number, charter school name, and your phone number to lisahandsonscience@gmail.com. I am a vendor for all local charter schools.
