Outdoor In-Person Ecology
Let's get together outdoors and learn about the interactions between organisms and their surroundings!
This 3-class series will be held at Bass Lake Regional Park (next to Sellwood Field) in El Dorado Hills. Students will be out in the field learning about ecosystems, biotic/abiotic factors, symbiosis (mutualism/commensalism/parasitism), food webs, plant communities (chaparral/oak woodland), and plant/animal adaptations. This park has a very diverse population of plants and animals for us to observe. The week of March 22, we saw a slender salamander, centipede, horse hair worm, and lots of flowers and acorn woodpeckers, just to name a few!
COVID Safety Precautions: Social distancing and proper mask wearing are required, no exceptions. No see-through mesh/lace masks allowed. Students must comply with charter school/governmental guidelines. Parents and siblings not enrolled in class will need to remain separate from the class group.

- Grades 4-8
- These classes are designed for older students. Due to the high demand for this class and the strict group number guidelines I need to follow, I will enroll mature 2nd and 3rd graders only if they are a sibling of an older student enrolled in the class. A parent must accompany 2nd and 3rd graders during the class. My goal in offering these classes is to get older children outside and discovering nature during the pandemic and I want to be able to support those older children first. I'm sorry I can't accommodate everyone! Kindergarteners and 1st graders will not be accepted this semester.
- High schoolers are welcome to join, too. (I have 2 high schoolers interested in their own class. Let me know if you'd be interested in a May high schooler session.)
- 3 - one-hour classes (3 weeks) (Class may go over 1 hour, so please don't have anything scheduled right after this class.)
- Class fee (3 weeks of class): $45 per student
- Maximum class size: 14 students (or combination of parents/students)
- Items for students to bring to class: comfortable closed-toed shoes, mask, water
- Suggested items: hat and binoculars (sometimes there is a bald eagle at the park!)
- Items provided: worksheets/sketch paper, pencil, clipboard, magnifying glass
COVID Safety Precautions: Social distancing and proper mask wearing are required, no exceptions. No see-through mesh/lace masks allowed. Students must comply with charter school/governmental guidelines. Parents and siblings not enrolled in class will need to remain separate from the class group.
